Happy Valentine`s Day!

Valentine`s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In North America and Europe, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine`s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

In Pakistan, especially the metro cities, everything turns into red; gift shops, malls, restaurants, and clubs adopt the color of love; Red. Valentine`s Day is one of the most non-islamic celebrated days among the youth. One can argue that though the region does not have any historical or religious ties with the event or with the Valentine Saints that created this event, this event is very much celebrated there because people are looking for reason to express love in the open. Pakistan is known for its conservative nature where unmarried couples are frowned upon, and even for married couples, public displays of affection are unofficially not allowed. This, together with the economical status of the country and the increased rate of frustration among the youth, people wait for such an event to express joy. This need was detected by businesses and was therefore more emphasized. Private and public events. Valentine themed restaurants and Cafe`s. Valentine greetings in radio channels and on TV are played all the time. Exchanged presents and flowers (usually all red) between couples is a sacred routine on that day. By all means one can state that Valentines Day is very much recognized in Pakistan.
